Variety Performance - Not Today

Variety Performance - Not Today

My original ideas for my variety performance was to play a piece from a musical on my trumpet. However, I watched the music video for the K-Pop song 'Not Today' by BTS (Bangtan Boys) and instantly fell in with the complex routine and message behind the song. After the video had finished, I desperately wanted to learn and perform the dance because I felt that it would show my determination to learn new things and introduce people to different cultures through a medium that everyone loves: music.

Once I decided upon my performance and started learning the choreography, I already had some clear ideas on the presentation of the piece as a whole. I knew that I wanted the music video playing behind me as I danced, which meant that I would have minimal lighting so that the projection could be seen, however I also needed to be lit enough for people to see me perform. I wanted basic lighting so that the audiences attention would be drawn between the music video and myself rather than the intricate lighting and staging.

I didn't feel the need to change or adjust anything in my performance after learning the choreography because I wanted my piece to be a personal presentation of the original performance and was capable enough to perform the dance without need to create different variations of dance moves so that they were possible.

I need some support on the second verse due to there being not dancing in this section; the issue was resolved quickly when I was given the idea to repeat the movement from the first verse with a slight variation because the verse was slightly shorter than the first.

Rehearsing:
The first few rehearsals, I reassured that I knew the dance completely by watching the music video and then danced along to it whilst I had a peer watch to feedback on my performance and point out any incorrect movements on my behalf. Once I was positive that I knew the dance completely, I began rehearsing with the video behind me and filmed my performance to see how it looked and to see my timings with the video.

I wanted my act to introduce people to the Korean culture through their music, as well as the message of the song clinging to me; that you must fight against the struggles life throws at you and to never give up on what you want, just fight harder. I felt that effect was achieved and it has even made some of my peers interested in the Korean culture through this medium.

To make sure that my performance was confident and technically secure ready for the performance, I rehearsed relentlessly in and outside of lessons and made sure that I had a clear idea about lighting and projection for my piece.
